The Japanese car companies are not a monopoly. So they need to compete, and they choose to compete mostly for the most profitable part of the market now, while holding off the low end upstarts like Kia with cars like the Nissan.

Microsoft is in a position of power that allows them to slow, kill, or in the last resort, buy, the progress made by those who would become a problem for them. I do not expect their OS products to improve quickly. This doesn't take a crystal ball. They were moving faster but not fast, when they had exemplars to copy from. But at this point they would have to invent not copy, and what is their motivation.

I have been hearing about voice technology for 15 years, and it's still coming any day now. All they talk about is this kind of boring and ludicrously impractical phantasm. And 'improvements' like IE integration..
