I'll defer to others on the best technical description of the MBR, but the registry isn't kept within it. I'm not sure how one would restore a trashed MBR, although a restore of a Drive Image file for the c: partition should do it, if it's recent enough.

Most of my crashes occour while surfing also.

Let me know if you think a confusion on my part of your two machines garbled my previous advice.
