Zeuspaul's early proposal con't

"The Asus site does not list the P2B-LS"

asus.com.tw

"The decision is between AHA2940, AHA3940 and onboard. One option might be the onboard SCSI coupled with the Mylex RAID controller. The Mylex RAID controller will do it all however they recommend using a separate controller for peripherals. Their reasoning is why waste a RAID controller on non RAID uses. It will take some time to sort this out."

Indeed, a relatively complex matter.

A little taste of the onboard SCSI on the P2B-LS is at asus.com.tw

I haven't spent much time looking this over, but their on board chip is not cheap at all--better even than the one on their standard 2940. From the site (no URL, just a search of "7890":

"The AIC-7890 is a 32-bit Ultra2 SCSI single channel chip that has been in full production and is available for system OEMs. The AIC-7890 has been designed onto Adaptec's Ultra2 SCSI host adapter-the AHA-2940U2W-which is also available to OEMs, system integrators and VARS. Both products have been shipping since January 1998. "

here's some specs:

adaptec.com

While the on-board SCSI connection does cut into upgradability, my guess is (1) you're getting about a $2-300 controller for about a $100 price premium over a P2B-L, and (2) this is a board you likely won't need to upgrade for a while, unless you want to go over 1 gig ram or need _many_ PCI slots.

"Thats good news?? I can upgrade my Compaq now with the MII card. Let me know if you find out more details."

Not sure I understand this, but you should be able to upgrade easily enough. The 4 mb MII can be had for about $108 OEM, $112 retail.

Will keep you posted if I find more out on G200-MII multi-monitor capability.

Glad to be of some modest help. Will look forward to hearing how your idea evolves.
