Sid,

I'll have to admit there's a lot I don't know about Intel. I haven't worked with their design teams, and so you may be right, I am just judging them by the end results in the microprocessor market. But my experience with Intel people has matched what I have heard about them in the industry--that they are good engineers. What especially impressed me about them is that they knew when they were getting BS from my company and knew what to ask for. Most of our other customers were not that sharp, including some big names in the industry.

As far as startups go, their big advantage is their ability to do things without the bureaucratic mess of a big company, from which Intel is not immune. When the startups do things right, the little guys like Nvidia and 3Dfx can sometimes beat up on the giants like Intel. That's the beauty of free enterprise, which I love to see.
