Actually, I believe vertical integration is the correct model if you can keep up with the technology curve and keep the factories fully loaded. If you were to look at Seagate's offering, they have fallen off the technology (relative to other DD makers) in the desktop segment and market share has fallen.

If IBM continues to be time to market with new technology, the vertical integration should work very nicely for IBM.

Have you read Maxtor's 10K. Maxtor also believes that it needs to be vertical integrated for some components to compete effectively. Ever thought that Maxtor going public now is so that possibly they can use equity to buy a head company, like RDRT? They don't have the cash. But head companies are cheap.
