For reference purposes: RESEARCH ALERT - Semiconductor firms estimates cut CHICAGO, June 11 (Reuters) - Gruntal & Co. on Thursday said it lowered earnings estimates for semiconductor makers based on a revised forecast by the Semiconductor Industry Association for a 1.8 percent decline in 1998 shipments. Gruntal analyst Mona Eraiba said the new SIA forecast may still be optimistic, as first quarter industry shipments declined 4.9 percent year-over-year and 9.2 percent sequentially. The SIA in October forecast a rise of 16 percent for 1998. The revision is the result of the economic crisis in Asia and its impact on demand and pricing, Eraiba said.
