Stephen, I would think it a good idea for your wife's boss to
hot-foot it over to 3COM as fast as he can, maybe save himself
some money.

VLAN is not new to 3COM, an old white paper "3Com Transcend VLANs"
at 3com.com outlined 3COM's
strategy in this area. For products they listed under
"Transcend VLANs Delivery Roadmap
3Com is delivering Transcend VLANs in three broad phases. While these
phases are described here as separate and discrete, there will be
overlap in the delivery of some of these capabilities across 3Com's
switching product family". Then they said:
"Most of the functionality delivered under Phase 1 is already shipping
today; complete support will be delivered by the end of 1996.
Phase 2 functionality will be delivered during 1996 and 1997.
Phase 3 functionality will begin shipping in 1997."

Some exerpts from current product descriptions:

"CoreBuilder 5000 TranscendWare software enhancements include standards-based switch-to-switch VLAN trunking and AutoCast VLAN
(IGMP Snooping) software support. These enhancements allow trunking
between the CoreBuilder 5000 switch and the CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3
High-Function Switch. This enables CoreBuilder 5000 switch customers
to deploy VLANs based on FIRE, 3Com's recently-unveiled
wire-speed Layer 3 routing and switching ASIC.

Virtual LANs
The VLAN capability integrated in the CoreBuilder 7000 family allows
you to organize network users into logical groups or broadcast domains,
regardless of their physical location.

SuperStack II Desktop Switch Key Features:
VLAN support - Reduction in broadcast traffic loading, increased
security and easing traditional administrative constraints based on
user location can all be achieved through LAN-wide VLAN implementation.

In addition, another nice white paper by 3COM engineers is highlighted
at pcwebopedia.com

Does 3COM also have this or does Cisco have an edge here?
