The "little-bit-of-Europe" culture has always puzzled me since they (and us) are all "Americans". It has always puzzled me why the people of the USA took on the name "Americans".... As anybody in the continent IS an American. Even the name "North American" is not fitting either, as Canadians and Mexicans ARE North Americans. You can't call them "United Statesians", since the "oficial name for Mexico is actually, "United States of Mexico". So we have a dilemma here.... What do we call the people of the "50 States" ? The Mexicans have a word for them which is "Gringo".... However, lately, the word "Gringo" has been extended (by some), to ANYONE not being Mexican, or Spanish speaking. Even those with funny accents (in Spanish), such as the Argentineans, who "sing", rather than "speak" Spanish.... are sometimes called "Gringos". ALthough they are really "Che's". Now, remember that the Mexican accent known throughout Latin-America, is NOT the real accent, as the reason everyone in Latin America think that Mexican accent is a "singing" accent, is due to the popularity of the Mexican movies of the 40's and 50's, of the [singing] "Charros" (Mexican Cowboy). Not to forget that the Mexican movie industry, (of then as of now), has been horryfic in the best case scenario, and even worse, in the last few years, with the most pathetic "soap-operas" ever produced. In spite of the above these "Operettas of the Absurd", are tremendously popular throughout Latin America, with the Brazilian brand a close second. And even more surprising, is the fact that these "novels" (as their creators whish to call them), have been an OUTSTANDING success in...... "Mother" Russia.... So I would like to propose to all here to come up with a suggestion for a name for the Americans, (USA), as I indicated, an American could be someone from Bolivia... etc. I guess that shows you that we are all members of planet earth.fastnet.ndirect.co.uk
