Will the electorate stand still for absence of action, or would they demand change? Here I think there would be screams for blood. Would this situation in fact be great cover to take the strong action needed, and be seen as the party with the plan to fix things and being bold enough to actually do something?

Jim --

Like you, I'm not expert in Japanese politics, but your reasoning seems sound. The official word's out: they're in a recession. This is a clear mandate for change.

When in July is the election? I would imagine to win you'd have to promise radical changes. Was it Roosevelt who brought the US out of the Great Depression, or was it the war? I'm guessing the telecommunications "revolution" will do the same with Asia and Japan this time around.

Later --
