Compaq Puts Zip in Presario

by Rex Farrance, PC World
June 10, 1998

Iomega has won another battle in the superfloppy wars with Compaq's announcement that it is making Zip drives standard in most models of its Presario line of home computers. Compaq will also offer Zip drives as an option on its other systems under a new "Built For You" custom-configuration program. The Zip drive is a feature increasingly demanded by home PC users, who need affordable, high-capacity 100MB media to store and transport large graphics files and Web-based content.

Compaq's decision is consistent with a trend toward widespread adoption of Iomega's 100MB Zip product for use in desktop PCs. Ironically, Compaq was one of a group of companies originally promoting the development of Imation's competing LS-120 media, which is now known as SuperDisk. The 120MB SuperDisk was late to market, and it hasn't effectively challenged Zip on the desktop. However, the SuperDisk is popular in notebook PCs, where the drive's smaller dimensions and compatibility with standard 1.44MB floppies is an advantage.
