On the wall street journal careers page, oracle has alot of job openings all over the usa. It either means they are expanding rapidly or alot of people have left. FWIW, I was in the Redwood City/San Mateo area (where Oracle HQ is located) in November '97 and it was virtually impossible to get a motel room - the explanation given by the motel staff was that Oracle was renting all the rooms for new employees. If they are still looking for people I would guess they're just still expanding.
