Using acses.com, Amazon consistently charges more for most books than its competition. Is this proof of the power of its brand or its achilles tendon? If the latter, why don't competitors exploit this weakness?

I agree, it doesn't take much to drive by a mall and see the parking lot full even on a beautiful summer day. e-tailing won't put the retailers out of business nor the direct mailers. It will just add another option to the mix and create a new class of buyers, just as the direct mailers did 10-20 years ago. I'm in the direct mail business and when we buy lists we look for direct reponsive buyers (that's why once you order something from direct mail, it seems like everyone is suddenly after you.) AMZN will help create another new class of buyers who are internet responsive buyers. So now there will be three distinct classes of buyers and IMO sellers to all three of these will prosper. And I think the ones who will prosper the most will be the ones who go after all three classes.

It's good to see the setiment changing on this thread. I started lurking here after I shorted the stock and was a bit shocked to see everyone here a bear. I think to be successful in shorting you've got to be a contrarian. AMZN has got a good chance of being a great company 20 years in the future, it's just right now they're way overvalued. My short's just a basic business decision, nothing more. The question now is how long the hype will last.

Glenn - agreed. I must say I will be impressed if Amazon , or anybody , is able to do much more with it than the book / CD / video type of stuff.
Remember how HUGE Home Shopping Network was going to be, when it was the rage about ten years ago ?
It was going to revolutionize retailing as we know it! Everything would be sold over the TV , and you would just call to place the order! It was so slick, so simple , so hyped............it is funny how the expectations for a new concept feed on themselves until people are predicting some of the most ludicrous BS imaginable.
I for one am getting a bit tired of going over the same old arguments in response to the same old claims and dreams posted here by the faithful (and hopeful). What new can we talk about concerning Amazon?
