[Xybernaut Allies With IBM In Developing Wearable Computer Products] FAIRFAX, Va. -(Dow Jones)- Xybernaut Corp. Monday announced it will work with International Business Machines Corp. to develop and promote wearable speech-activated computer products. Shares of Xybernaut, a pioneer in the wearable computer industry, soared on the news. At midday, Xybernaut's stock (XYBR) was up $1.25, or 25%, at $6.25, on volume of 2.2 million. Average daily volume is 1.4 million. Xybernaut will demonstrate its new Mobile Assistant line, as well as new head-mounted and flat-panel displays , in the IBM exhibit area at the PC Expo in New York this week. Xybernaut said since its products complement IBM's (IBM) multilingual speech-recognition products, the companies plan to work together to better define markets for the systems. "IBM's commitment to developing world-class speech recognition engines in the market's most requested languages has opened up opportunities we didn't anticipate being able to address for years to come," said David Schweppe, Xybernaut's vice president of marketing. Xybernaut said the cooperation with IBM will enable customers "to access and collect computerized information hands-free, wherever and whenever needed, in any of seven languages." IBM officials said Xybernaut's new Mobile Assistant, the MA IV, will compliment the computer giant's ViaVoice voice-recognition technology. The MA IV contains 233 MHz, 128 MB memory and four gigabits hard drive, "all packed into a tiny 1-1/2 pound standard WINTEL belt-worn module" Xybernaut said. Last month, Xybernaut unveiled an agreement with Sony Digital Products to manufacture the latest model of Xybernaut's wearable computers. MA IV, which features a heads-up color display and a speech-recognition package, is expected to enter mass production in September.
