Xybernaut(R) to Demonstrate New Wearable Computer Featuring IBM Speech Technology at PC EXPO

FAIRFAX, Va., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Xybernaut Corporation (Nasdaq: XYBR), a pioneer and leader in the wearable computer market, today announced its intent to combine IBM Corporation's expertise in multilingual speech recognition with Xybernaut's experience and intellectual property in designing speech-activated wearable computers. The combined strength of both companies will allow customers to access and collect computerized information hands-free, wherever and whenever needed, in any of seven languages. Early high-payback application of wearable systems include inventory and sorting, as well as equipment installation, inspection, trouble shooting, maintenance and repair.

The companies intend to work together to better define the markets for their systems, and develop solutions to address those markets. The new wearable systems will be presented in IBM's exhibit area at the PC EXPO in NYC on June 16-18, 1998.

IBM's Brian Remington, National Sales Manager for Speech Systems, stated "Xybernaut's new Mobile Assistant(R), the MA IV, is a great complement to IBM's ViaVoice speech technology, offering customers tremendous opportunities for productivity gains. It really meets the needs of customers who want remote computing in a hands-free environment."

The new MA IV, with its 233 MHz MMX technology, 128 MB memory and 4 GB hard drive, all packed into a tiny 1-1/2 pound standard WINTEL belt-worn module, has the necessary power to let the IBM's speech engines really do their job. Xybernaut will also be showing its new 10-ounce full-color VGA miniature head mounted display, and its 6" VGA full-color digitizing flat panel display for the first time.

Xybernaut's Vice President of Marketing, David Schweppe, went on to say "IBM's commitment to developing world-class speech recognition engines in the market's most requested languages has opened up opportunities we didn't anticipate being able to address for years to come. And the quality and performance of the recognition is truly exceptional. I am confident that Xybernaut's and IBM's distributors and resellers, as well as our direct sales groups, will be thrilled to take this new offering to the marketplace -- a marketplace growing in its awareness of the benefits that full-function wearable computers and state-of-the-art wireless communications can offer."

Xybernaut Corporation is a leader in providing integrated hardware, software and service solutions to the emerging wearable computing industry. Xybernaut's Mobile Assistant(R) series of patented wearable computer systems feature portability, speech-activation and head-mounted displays that allow users hands-free access to information in the computer's internal storage, in local area networks, and on the Internet on an as-needed, where-needed basis. Xybernaut's software is designed to provide users with the right information needed for the task at hand using consistent navigation techniques and screen presentations.
