Jim, Even here, there is an extensive Michael Jordan and Bulls fan club. It's good to see some amazing people on this planet. But his intellectual property has given the Bulls a Michael Jordan monopoly, so he should be required to put 5 points on the opposition scoreboard. He refuses to play for other teams and that is unfair too. He should be required to play half the games for other teams - such as Nokia, who can't win unless they have use of his ability.

Did you see the brand new Ericsson boss whining about Qualcomm's intellectual property. He says they love competition? Oh yes?

And Tero, you are rehashing a point which was rebutted long ago. We all agree that if Qualcomm offers a dog of a phone, then all the wonderful air interface in the world won't save it. And yes, GSM handsets have enjoyed lots of design attention and they have done an excellent job. Nobody denies that. But people buy the overall deal and while GSM developments have held the line excellently by maximizing the handset aspect of the package, they can only go so far.

Ericsson and Nokia have agreed and so are working their way around to agreeing to buy cdma2000 from the Mighty-Q. Tero, nobody on earth is pretending that GSM is anything other than an interim standard which will be supplanted by CDMA. You are fighting the battle of the Alamo. It's over now and the only question remaining on that one is how quickly cdmaOne and cdma2000 can take over and whether Ericsson will be involved or not.

There remains a question as to whether Qualcomm's patents will be stolen by Ericsson and Nokia backed by Koreans and Japanese and perhaps other companies too. It seems absurdly unlikely for the reasons Gregg has gone over so much that nobody should need them repeated.

The main question is the price. I'm in favour of charging what the market will bear and maximizing the royalty stream. Auctions are great for that.

PS: Oil down to $10.50 for Dubai traded. Wow! Hoopla for USA! Gold down to $286! Gee!

AND that cheeky gang of Capstone creators have pinched the letter Q! Yes, Compaq intend to make the Q like the swoosh. Does that mean no more Mighty-Q? Weren't we there first?
