Well originally, the starting wafers (either Sapphire, EPI on oxide, or
Implanted oxygen) were very expensive ... Looks like IBM is trying to
reduce that cost by making them for themselves. Also in the old days,
dislocations and implant damage affected yield ... Another reason for
IBM to own/optimize this part of the process. Other steps in the process
should be of similar cost/complexity as compared to normal EPI CMOS.
