This has turned into a chain letter with some truth to it. This scam has
been used for years with businesses, hospitals, and government agencies as
targets.

If your phone systems is setup to access an outside line using 9, then 0
will give you an outside operator. You'd be setting up a conference call
for the caller using your phone system. There are variations of codes that
are unique to your telephone system provider, not just AT&T. These normally
don't affect resident phones.

The telephone is used often for "Social Engineering" to gain information. No
one should ever give information to anyone you don't know. There's no way to
verify identities over the telephone for incoming calls when you don't know
the person.
