Bringing cutting-edge technology to the broadest array of customers at affordable prices, Compaq Computer Corporation CPQ today introduced a high-value family of fully integrated notebook computers featuring Intel's mobile Pentium(R) II technology. The new Armada 1700 Series takes the simplicity and convenience of the popular Armada 1500 one step further by adding Compaq's modular MultiBay design and optional DVD support, along with a built-in AC adapter -- features traditionally found only in high-end, performance-oriented notebooks. The products will be exhibited at the PC Expo '98 trade show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City beginning tomorrow.

Additional product announcements from Compaq include three new Armada 7800 models featuring the company's first 14.1-inch color TFT (thin film transistor) displays, ideal for performance-minded users and business professionals who require powerful presentation capabilities for small groups. The new Armada 1505DM, Compaq's ultimate value notebook at $1,599, was also announced today.

New Armada 1700 Notebooks Combine Convenience with Intel's Pentium II Chip

Ideal for small and medium-sized businesses and corporate customers on a budget, the first two feature-rich Armada 1700 Series models are based on a range of Intel's mobile Pentium II processors. The Armada 1700 Series is designed for maximum flexibility, offering three-spindle support (hard drive, floppy drive, and CD-ROM support) combined with Compaq's MultiBay design. Add to that an integrated AC adapter and a built-in K56flex modem(C), and the Armada 1700 customer is ready to go anywhere, any time.

Easing the integration of future technology, the Armada 1700 is Compaq's first value notebook to provide full support for optional DVD and an upgrade path to V.90 modem technology(D).

The first Armada 1700 model features Intel's mobile Pentium II processor at 266-MHz, a 13.3-inch color TFT 1024 x 768 display, 24X Max. CD-ROM(E), 32MB SDRAM, a 4GB SMART hard drive(F) and a lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery. Prices are $3,349 for a model with Windows 95 pre-installed. The second model incorporates Intel's mobile Pentium II processor at 233-MHz, a 12.1-inch color TFT 800 x 600 display, a 24X CD-ROM(G), 32MB SDRAM, a Li-Ion battery, a 4GB SMART hard drive(H) and Windows 95, and is priced at $2,869.

The Armada 1700 Series boasts extraordinary PremierSound Audio with eight stages of equalization and bass reflex stereo speakers; a USB port; and configuration flexibility with MultiBay support for a floppy drive, second hard drive, second battery, SuperDisk LS-120 Drive or Zip drive, as well as K56flex data/fax modem(I).

Further reducing the total cost of ownership, the Armada 1700 products are compatible with the Armada 1500 convenience base. And for added convenience, the Armada 1700 features a tool-less design that allows users to easily upgrade and manage their hard drive and memory -- all a customer has to do is pop up the keyboard for quick access.

The Armada 1700 Series is expected to be available worldwide in July.

New Armada 7800 Models Combine AGP with 14.1-inch Color TFT Displays

Compaq's new Armada 7800 Series models are the ideal choice for power users who demand a large 14.1-inch screen size for desktop-equivalent viewing. Combined with a new 8GB SMART hard drive(J), the Armada 7800 Series provides industry-leading performance and full desktop functionality in a mobile PC.

Compatible with the powerful award-winning ArmadaStation desktop expansion base, these new Armada 7800 models feature Intel's mobile Pentium II processor at 266-MHz, an 8GB SMART hard drive(K), AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) implementation with a dedicated 66-MHz graphics bus with support for 3-D acceleration, a 24X Max. CD-ROM(L), 64MB SDRAM, 512K Level 2 cache and a Li-Ion battery. The standard MultiBay design gives customers the ability to configure a future DVD option, a CD-ROM drive, a SuperDisk LS-120 drive, a second battery, second hard drive or a diskette drive. The Armada 7800 with Windows 95 pre-installed (without a modem) is priced at $5,359; a model with Windows 95 and a 33.6Kbps data/fax modem pre-installed is priced at $5,549; and a model with Windows NT 4.0 pre-installed (without a modem) is also priced at $5,549.

Armada 1505DM Provides the Ultimate Compaq Value

For the notebook user who wants convenience on a tight budget, the Armada 1505DM provides users with an impressive array of features at the value price of $1,599. Available immediately worldwide, the Armada 1505DM offers Intel's Pentium processor with MMX technology at 200-MHz, a 12.1-inch fast response Color STN display, 2.1GB SMART hard drive(M), 32MB EDO RAM, 512K Level 2 cache, a K56flex modem(N), a 20X Max. CD-ROM(O), a USB port and Microsoft Windows 95. The Armada 1505DM also comes standard with a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery.

All Armada 1700 and 1505DM products come standard with a one-year limited worldwide warranty, while the Armada 7800 comes with a three-year warranty. In addition, both the Armada 1700 and 7800 Series offer a broad range of service and support offerings, including expedited second business day pickup(P) and return, Carbon Copy remote technical support, Info Messenger and a QuickRestore CD.

As with all Compaq commercial Armada notebooks, the Armada 1700, 1505DM and 7800 come standard with Compaq's acclaimed Intelligent Manageability software including enhanced security, asset management and fault prediction via SMART removable hard drives.
