In other words they simply ran over the competition's dingy with their supertanker.

They certainly did run them over didn't they. But there was genuine concern a few years back that it was all over for MSFT. "Is windows irrelevant?", "Will Java Kill Windows?", "Can Micosoft survive?" yada yada yada.

But I agree Intel is a different animal, with a new set of concerns. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Isn't IE based on Spyglass's browser? The way I remember events, Marc Andreesen and the rest of the NCSA gang at U of Illinois made Mosaic. Then Andreesen and some others split off to create Netscape as a commercial venture, with Navigator as their browser. Meanwhile, others stayed behind, eventually started Spyglass, with a browser based on Mosaic, and a different strategy from Netscape: While Netscape sold (or gave away) their browser as a Netscape product, Spyglass sold their browser as a core for other companies' own browsers or networks. One of Spyglass's customers was Microsoft and thus IE was born.

At least, that's the way I remember it. My brother was working at NCSA at the time, and I invested in both Netscape and Spyglass. However, this is all years old and I might have made some historical errors.
