ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1998--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND), a leader in wide area networking (WAN) solutions for providers and users of the Public Network, today announced Q1 1998 research findings from Dell'Oro Group ranking Ascend's MAX(tm) family of WAN Access Switches number one in remote access concentrator (RAC) revenue, analog port shipments and ISDN PRI B-channel port shipments.

According to Dell'Oro Group, Ascend's MAX family of WAN Access Switches accounted for 30.9 percent manufacturer revenue market share, topping second and third place 3Com and Cisco. Dell'Oro Group figures show Ascend's continued leadership in analog port shipments, with 35.1 percent market share. Ascend also leads the RAC ISDN PRI B-channel market segment with more ports shipped than the rest of the industry combined, racking up 53.1 percent market share.

"These studies reinforce our leadership in the RAC market," said Kurt Bauer, vice president of product management for Ascend's Access Switching Business Unit. "Our MAX family of WAN Access Switches, with our True Access(tm) Operating System, provide a broad range of access solutions, including MultiVoice and MultiVPNs, that Service Providers and enterprise customers require to succeed in today's rapidly changing telcom industry."

Demonstrating continued growth and leadership in the remote access concentrator market, Ascend has steadily increased its analog port market share over the past three years to 43.6 percent in 1997 from 35 percent in 1996 to 15.6 percent in 1995, according to Dell'Oro Group.
