I would dump any bank that charged me a fee for making a deposit. If you shop around you should be able to find a bank that doesn't gouge you every time you turn around. My checking account has no maintenece fee ($3 if the balance <$500), and pays 5% interest on the balance if it's over $500. It does require a monthly electronic deposit though. There's only 3 branches, but will be happy to provide the banks name if you're in the DC area.
