perhaps you dont consider it a racial slur
but others did (that is how I found out about the post as i dont read the Dell thread)
so it is all relative

maybe you consider her comment
as not polite which is different than PC according to Randy
or was her comment NON-PC
or maybe you think her comment was appropriate
or maybe because it was TECHIE it was appropriate

I dont know
but it wasnt appropriate and it was pretty stupid to assume Lee is Asian because of her name and that Lee assumes JUST BECAUSE she is Asian that she has an insight into Asian business practices...(as opposed to Techie who talks to CEO's and CFO's all the time)

btw, is Lee Asian and if she is Asian should such a comment have been said
and if she is not Asian
should such a comment have been said????

it's all relative..

Kevin--first let me express my appreciation for your unambiguous denunciation.

Re Techie's post, I agree with you that there was no racial slur directed at Lee. I do feel that the assumption that Lee is Asian because of her name is rather silly--given that the name Lee, is one that is fairly common in the US, in the context of other racial groups. I also feel that stating that someone is not an authority regarding some country because he or she is from that country does not prove a thing--unless that individual stated something to the effect that "I am from there and therefore should know what I am talking about"--which Lee did not do.

As far as certain things being PC or otherwise--quite frankly that is NOT the issue. If someone who is from a particular racial group considers the use of a particular word to be a slur--I would not use it. The PC part of it is that what is acceptable seems to change over time. There was a time when the use of the term "negro" was acceptable to a person of that race--then it was "black" and today "African American" appears to be the preferred form. Similarly, the term "Oriental" has been replaced by "Asian" and "American Indian" by "Native American". One might wonder as to where this ends but if the member of any racial group prefers to be referred to by any particular term, for my part, it takes no effort to accord them the courtesy of using that term. The issue is the sensitivity of that particular group --not how other not belonging to that group feel about the appropriateness of the term.

Dom's post using words like "japs" and "chinks" was blatantly offensive and I have NO doubt in my mind that he must have known that it would be viewed that way. I believe that he lives in LA where there is a large Asian population and he must know that these are derogatory terms. Now he may have thought that he was being funny--and if so it was a rather dismal attempt at humor.

What I find rather perplexing is how recent disagreements on this thread which used to be about market related matters--a la your exchanges with Pascal--seem today to be on things that are not market related and seem to involve a certain amount of jingoism and oblique racism. Not sure why this is so.

Hopefully, this is my last post on this issue as well.

Once again, my thanks to you, as the host of this thread, for setting the tone for what is acceptable.

Take care
