Xy,
The Rep was concerned on how much PB could make on the $699 unit (price less the printer and monitor). He did mention that HE didn't make much on it and the fat check for him was in the Pentium II units.
He did ask me how much I thought the box cost Packard Bell to build. After going through the components I estimated $300 or less including labor.
NSM has made a living selling low priced parts. When they get their production costs under control (get away from IBM) they will have a much better chance of making money. This is probably two quarters away however. In the mean time they certainly benefit by getting their product used by top tier boxmakers...i.e. Packard Bell/NEC, Compaq and IBM even though they have little margin.
Bascially, this is what AMD did...in the mean time AMD has worked through their production problems and about to flood the market with K6-2s. Just watch.
