Peppe: If valuation is based on the customary P/S basis NN would be near 7/8 of Bay.

Peppe,

With Bay taken out, I don't see any obvious alternatives for LU. You mentioned ASND and NN, but they are not at all similar to Bay. LU has for a long time re-sold Bay products to fill holes in it's product line. If NT steals Bay, it needs to re-plug those holes.

Since NN and ASND (for the most part) don't sell the same type of products as Bay, I don't see how they would help much. I think Cabletron is a much more similar type of co. And of course Cisco.<g>
And I've heard Xylan mentioned but I don't know much about them.

I think NT has forced LU's hand. LU is going to have to start a bidding war for Bay, unless they can come to some sort of agreement with Cisco.

And re: Cisco...they need a telecom partner don't they? Maybe this Nortel move is going to force LU and CSCO into each other's arms...

This sure is going to be an interesting summer...

Andrew

Peppe,

There is no way in Hell that Terry Matthews would sell out!
If you knew him, you would know why.

What did you think of the NT/BAY merger announcement. I'm thinking LU has to make a move to respond and the choices are ASND or NN. If BAY is worth $9.1 Billion, what's NN worth ?

I agree, if Bay's worth $9.1 billion, then those with far better technology have certainly increased in value with this buyout. According to a recent JP Morgan report, BAY and NN don't compete in each other's markets, so this can't be construed as a loss for NN.

The big question is whether LU will wait for Oct. to make a move.

Lots to watch.
