The competition is a joke right now. 3DFX is shipping millions of VooDoo 2 chips TODAY. Chips with outstanding performance and excellent display quality on real world hardware. Meanwhile all the competition has to offer is vapor. S3 and Matrox have a long history of hyping 3D accelerators only to release products that are, frankly, pathetic. I believe both the Matrox and S3 offerings will fall way short of expectation and deliver real world performance (compatibility, speed, display quality) inferior to VooDoo I.

Nvidia has a more solid reputation than S3 and Matrox but they, also, are known for shipping overhyped products prematurely. The Riva128, for example, was at its best slightly inferior to VooDoo I. I would guess that the Riva TNT will be slighly inferior to VooDoo II once all the hype settles and a real product actually ships. [sorry folks I don't see it running Unreal at 1600 x 1200 at 60 FPS; those type of claims reak of marketing hype]
