NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sigma Designs, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIGM - news), a leader in DVD decoder solutions for personal computers, today announced that its REALmagic EM8300 DVD/MPEG-2/MPEG-1 decoder IC is fully compatible with Panasonic's DVD-RAM drive. The new DVD-RAM drives are being demonstrated by Panasonic Industrial Company at PC EXPO in New York this week.

''Panasonic is one of the first companies to produce an economical, high- performance rewritable, removable drive that is in full compliance with the DVD Forum's DVD-RAM specifications and standards,'' commented Thinh Tran, Sigma Designs' Chairman and CEO. ''Combining Panasonic's drive with our REALmagic silicon for DVD decoding makes digital video more affordable to everyone,'' Mr. Tran concluded.

''Major corporations are already beginning to produce video solutions on DVD,'' Jeff Saake, general manager of Panasonic Industrial Company, noted. ''Simply by installing a DVD-RAM drive and Sigma Designs' REALmagic silicon DVD/MPEG-2 decoder, corporations have the key basic elements for a creative production workstation at a fraction of the cost of professional systems. Major solution providers are finding that by combining our two firms' products, they can put video application development in the hands of production professionals as well as HR, sales, and marketing departments.''

In addition to being approved by the DVD Forum, which has grown to more than 125 members, the DVD-RAM format has been adopted by the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and the European Computer Manufacturers' Association (ECMA). The standard has also been endorsed by the Hollywood DVD Advisory Group, more than 20 of the industry's leading PC manufacturers, and leading international content developers. It is presently being reviewed by the International Standards Organization (ISO). Industry analysts project that by the year 2000, more than 70 million DVD drives and players will be installed and that more than 30 million of these units will be DVD-RAM drives. Panasonic brand products are manufactured by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (NYSE: MC - news), one of the world's leading producers of CD-ROM drives and other digital electronic products.
