Vacationing in Arkansas--Day Two At the start of the day a couple of Lee's neighbors two brothers, Delfrey and Joe Boy came over to say hello. As soon as I said hello Defrey said, "Damn you sound like a Yankee!" Fortunately I had lived in Texas for five years and knew proper Southern manners so I hauled off and decked him. I then stood over him and said "I was born in SOUTH Dakota, my grand pappy's twice removed fought with Lee in the war and were killed doing so." At this point Delfrey got to his feet and raised up his hands to hit me when Joe Boy promptly decked him. "Now Del what the Hell you think you are doing?" "He done hit me Joe Boy!" "Of course he hit you, you all but called him a Yankee and him Southern born with kin that died in the war. [there is only one war ever fought of consequence as far as Southerners are concerned]. Ain't you ever gone to larn manners?" Joe Boy then wiped off his hand on his pants in a vain attempt to wipe off an accumulation of several years worth of dirt and various bodily secretions and stuck it out to shake mine. "I am proud to meet you Mr. Druss, you are a rare gentleman only hitting Del there once for that slander." I grasped and shook the offered hand after vowing to to seize the first chance I had to soak my hand in gasoline and then light it. "Delfrey is just ignorant I reckon." I said. "You is right there," Joe Boy replied, "I has been raising him since Pa run off with his cousin Rebecca to Texas and Ma took off to hunt him down some fifteen years ago. It has been a trial to me I must say." "You seem a kind soul, Joe Boy, perhaps you spared the rod a little too much in this case," I offered. "I believes you is right Mr. Druss, it is hard to beat much sense into him so I reckon I should just try harder. After we is done exchangin pleasantries I will whup on him a while in hopes of improving him some." After a bit more talk Lee and I headed into the house to the cheery sounds of Joe Boy beating the living tar out of Delfrey. "Damn Druss!" Lee said, "I didn't know you was Southern. Hell, I can let you meet my friends after all." "I can't wait Lee, I just can't wait."
