In the CNET article (post# 6535), Ascend is mentioned as a posible acquisition target of Alcatel:

Ascend recently digested its merger with Cascade Communications and is only now reaping the benefits, with its stock on the rebound. Both Cabletron and Ascend could be acquisition targets for other providers, such as Alcatel Alsthom.

Also, it is mentioned in an earlier Dow Jones article:

As merger mania seizes the industry, a likely next target
could be Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND), which
might be attractive to Lucent or the combined Tellabs
and Ciena, analysts said.
