Lisa,

Devaluations typically happen over weekends, so that may be of concern Thursday and Friday of this week. But, China has signaled that it will not devalue it's currency. One support catalyst that I see for Japan, would be for them to announce massive tax cuts. Now that other economies are emerging in Asia, Japan should no long rely on exporting itself out of recession. Although this has been their course of action in the past, it would be considered an act of economic war by some US companies (Autos) and even more so by other Asian economies.

The White House has been exploring and consulting with Japan on how they can turn their economy around, and the only reasonable choice left is tax cuts. Whether Clinton wants to admit it or not, deficit spending and tax cuts of the 80's and early 90's are the major force behind the strong economy that we are enjoying today. The later being the most significant. The only reasonable and responsible way out of this is tax cuts, if we believe and want free world trade to work.

Wayde.
