Jeff--this would be true only if he shorted more stock than he bought. Then he is "net short."

Correct, but the point is not to be net short, the point is to lock in profits by going short.

The goal is not usually to tank the stock with massive sales, that would be self-defeating, but to leak the stock in slowly so as to keep the value up.

BTW, a short squeeze would have no effect in these cases because the people doing the shorting already own the shares they will use to cover.
