hey jim
remember when datek were the only
brokerage that were able to borrow k-tel shares? I think there's
a lot of "small speculators" using datek, who frequently use margin
to buy stocks and therefore allow the firm to loan them out to people
who would sell them.
I would imagine the established full service brokerages don't have
their clients buying/selling these dubious stocks on margin on a
daily basis and therefore don't have any marginable stocks to lend.
imho, no conspiracy here...

>> Glen, please how could Datek have the only Amzn stock available to short in America. How are they getting it , while no one else can.<<
HJ - Datek is essentially a gigantic book, which interfaces with outside MMs when it (Island) cannot match a trade internally.
The impression I get is, they can enter shorts vs. longs into their book almost without limit, provided they have stock to deliver if the owner calls for it.
They may also collude with others running the squeeze, as in being covered (via a borrow) if they run out of actual stock to ship to DTC.
They can let people short , then close them out when the stock runs up , and the money of course goes to the "long" , which may be a house trading account for all we know. Provided that they can cover the stock which they have an obligation to deliver , the game runs along day after day.
I'm not saying the SEC would approve , and I'm not saying it's legal.
I'm just giving you my conjecture on what the "deal" may be. Rgds.

H,

I do not know. I have never been through something quite like this. My guess is something is spoiled.
