DON'T TAKE TOO MUCH VIAGRA ANY expert will tell you that there is an optimum dose of Viagra for each person. It may be 25mg, 50mg or 100mg. But if you take twice your dose, it will not cause twice the performance. If that is not enough of a deterrent, listen to the testimony of someone who has tried it. Three months ago British taxi-driver Ian Marsh was paid œ900 to take part in a new Viagra trial at Pfizer's research unit at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. It was aimed at discovering what level of the drug the body could safely absorb. 'I went in on a Sunday night,' he said, 'and was given a medical to ensure there was no alcohol or drugs in my blood. You're not permitted to take alcohol or caffeine in the 48 hours before the tests.' Next morning at 9am, along with 11 other volunteers, the 27-year-old father of three from Deal was given 400mg - four times the maximum prescribed amount. Two other men were given placebos. 'The dosage was in clear solution form and it tasted revolting, 'Ian recalled. 'Fifteen minutes after I had this incredibly powerful sensation of blood surging upwards to my head. It was a strange, extremely unpleasant feeling, one that I've never had before. 'The pressure in my head was incredible. It felt as if it was going to explode. The intensity of this rush lasted an hour, then it became a splitting headache in the frontal lobe 'At about llam I started feeling nauseous. I still had a splitting headache but worst of all, I was experiencing unbelievable back pain as well. It felt as if someone was sticking a knife into the bottom of my back, and then twisting it. 'Eventually I forced myself to stand up. I found that if I could stay bent over double, it eased the pain slightly. I began experiencing aches all over my body, deep aches in my bones. The whole thing was horrendous. I felt as if I was going to die. My head didn't stop pounding all day. 'Everyone else - except the two men on placebos, of course - experienced the same side-effects and spent the whole day lying in bed, writhing in agony. ' As the doses were repeated, the agony for many of the guinea pigs became too much to bear. Additionally, they developed such a aversion to bright light that the nurse used a torch on her rounds because all the lights had to be switched off. Mercifully, on the fourth of ten allotted days the experiment was halted. 'I think what I went through proves that it is definately not the case that the more Viagra you take, the better you sex life becomes,'added Ian with understatement. 'I'm sure we were just too ill to even think about sex.' The Viagra Fun Club be warned. Daily Mail, Monday June 15, 1998 - Natalie Clarke
