( BW)(TRADETICKER) Loral Chief Adamant, Aviation Week Reports

Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1998--Loral Space and Communications chief Bernard Schwartz, in his strongest statement on the subject yet, steadfastly insists no Loral employee transferred to China any technology or data that might help the nation's ballistic missile program.
In a recent interview with Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine, Schwartz was asked if he had given any though to resigning, given the political firestorm ignited by the controversy.
"There is no reason for me to entertain such an outlandish suggestion," Schwartz fired back. "This goes with the territory, and I like the territory I'm standing on. It should be absolutely clear -- Bernard Schwartz did nothing wrong, and I truly believe Loral people did nothing wrong."

The market sure seems nervous about the upcomming Zenit launch.

I find it very interesting that Loral only recently decided to change their launch dates. Presumably, nothing has changed wrt expectations of the reliability of the Zenit. If one of the two launches before the G* launch were to fail, it wouldn't matter if the G* launch was planned for 4 weeks or 4 months afterwards- it would have the same effect. It wouldn't be going up on a zenit any time soon. See what I mean?

So why move them now? I'm suspicious that sat production has been delayed slightly (no big deal to me) or that there is more concern about the Zenit and this delay allows better logistics for setting up alternate launch vehicles if one of the next two Zenits fails.
