An agreement was signed by the two leaders of the Turkish government coalition to hold early elections next April, even though elections aren't due until late 2000. Other coalition members and the country's president don't approve of the agreement, but the leftist Republican Peoples Party (CHP) insists on the agreement in exchange for their support for the agenda of the Motherland Party headed by the conservative Yilmaz. It seems to me the main reasons these factions work together are that they are strongly secular against Islamic pressure and that they all want to support reform legislation.

This is an excerpt from an article this morning. Adnan Keskin is the leftist CHP party's deputy chairman.

Turkey's financial markets have generally welcomed the election plan
because it gives the government backing from the opposition for
planned tax reforms and other economic measures.

''We are ready to make parliament work during the summer without
holidays to pass the draft laws the government wants to have,'' Keskin
said.

This is another indication that the Turkish waste oil legislation should be passed this summer.
