SOROS - spoke with CMND's CEO so far. Read or heard interviews (or conference calls) of CEO's of SEEC, CBSL, SYNT, IMRS. They are all solid with clear vision and execution plan. No worry!

Today's DOW drop of 200 points is just the beginning of the expected shakedown. Several contributors - economic collapse in Russia, Japan's unwillingness to eliminate internal problems contributing to their Recession, China's dilemma of their currency devaluation, financial mess in the rest of the Asian countries (Indonesia, S Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, etc.) Demand for items like airplanes, heavy equipment, autos, computers, etc. is down, hurting US multinationals' earnings unless the Asian mess is fixed. DOW components will suffer. NASDAQ lost. However, the y2k stocks did not show a significant decline. Some of them got upgrades from analysts. DOW drop is significant because some of the DOW component companies have heavy stock buyback programs in place. GM, EXXON, etc. have huge stock buyback programs. In spite of the buyback, DOW drops! After the next qtr earnings surprise, y2k stocks will attract smart money. Just an opinion. Ram

MARKET UPDATE (6/16/98) AM ----Gold went sharply higher
this morning on short covering in London and New York along
with a sense that the Asian crisis is for real and not
going to get better soon. This market has been
characterized by strong physical purchases of the metal as
investors globally hedge their portfolios against an array
of problems seemingly converging in the months and years to
come.

Those ordering gold at Centennial Precious Metals cite five
major concerns:

* 1. the year 2000 problem.
* 2. the introduction of the euro.
* 3. Asian currency crisis
* 4. the introduction of the Euro
* 5. potential stock and bond market crash (related to
all the above)

*** Message from Mad Monk ***

Hold on to your hat, SOROS, I had a talk with Mad Monk this afternoon and he asked me to post the following on SI. I am writing it in the first person - I hope I do justice to what he said. I took notes, but he talks very fast. He said he will be in the Far East in July and August and will call me when he returns to report first hand on the Asian situation. He also wants me to post that report on SI.

First, I send my best to my friends. I care about you, but am very busy and haven't been reading email, etc. I keep an eye on the Y2K index, but not individual stocks at this time. I am 100% cash and recommend it. At the least, you MUST get rid of margin. The Y2K stocks will come back during the panic, but it will be a short window and you must be very nimble. I will be back in Y2K with a vengeance when the panic hits and will communicate with you then. Time is running out for fixing Y2K!

How will we know when the panic is here and it is time to get back in?

1) The Asian situation is stable.
2) Clinton jumps in and makes things happen.
3) Watch the Y2K index! After it has bottomed and risen above the 20 or 50 day moving average with increased volume, the panic time is here.

The Asian currency situation is WAR! Australia is included in the Asian mix!

People in the Far East must first think of basic survival for themselves and their families, THEN consider their investments.

Be thankful for, and protect what you have!

Regards,
Mad Monk
