<<TOKYO, June 16 (Reuters) - Japan's Finance Minister Hikaru Matsunaga told a news conference on Tuesday he plans to respond to the yen's fall based on an April currency cooperation agreement among the Group of Seven nations.

Asked about the possibility of joint intervention with the United States to support the yen, Matsunaga said:

''At the April meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bankers, we issued a joint statement that a country's currency rate should reflect its economic fundamentals and that conspicuous divergences from fundamentals are unfavourable, and that the G7 would cooperate (on currencies).

''Based on this April statement, we want to respond (to the yen's decline),'' he said.

Asked about the recent fall in Japanese currency, stock and bond prices, Matsunaga said: ''We are monitoring them with great interest.''>>
