"Oh, man!", moaned Muffy. "I don't have Page A-17!".

Frustrated, she started twiddling her thumbs. She looked down at the cab seat next to her. There she saw Shorty's collar. She picked it up, thought for a moment she was going to cry again, then squeezed it tightly in her hand.

"Whoa!", exclaimed Muffy. "What's that?"

The act of squeezing Shorty's collar caused the leather to split down the seam. Hidden inside the collar was ...

Gasp... Muffy had used page A-17 to wrap her leftover fish and chips, and she recalled old Shorty had eaten the whole lot in one gulp.

That date... 6-19-74... the answer to why that date was so important was definitely to be found in the conclusion to the story-- on page A-17. But as it was last Thursday's WSJ, Muffy knew she couldn't just buy a new paper.

So she grabbed the pen knife from her purse, and opened the violin case...
