Checking update:

I just got May's statement, and along with it came the Datek/Motley Fool newsletter. Here's what Datek got to say:

"Q: What is check writing?"
"A: You can now write checks from your Datek Online account. Customers with Individual, Joint Tenants with Rights of SUrvivorship (JTWROS) and Tenants in Common accounts are eligible to participate in this new service. There are no size limitations on check amounts -- as long as you have the funds available in your account at the time that the check is being cleared. Check writing is in limited release. It will not be available to all customers until Beta testing is completed."

My question is, who are those lucky customers? ;)

Free ATM? Unfortunately, the institutions that set up the ATMs that are convenient have more say about "free" than Waterhouse. I agree that banks suck: they are using their ATM networks to bind customers close enough to be in range of creeping fees. Regrettably, the alternatives are less clear.

It is a pity the government can't confine its monopoly enforcement idiocy to markets the gov almost understands like banking rather than muck with software and technology. Of course then any ATM fee the gov would outlaw would be replaced by a gov fee. And likely a larger one as well that would need to be totaled, indexed, and included on our tax returns. What if nobody voted in the next election? Would some clown still win or would we shrink gov?

How long does it take to Beta-test checking anyway? It is not like checking is new cutting edge technology. It has been around a tad longer than the internet I hear.

Please take all the above as having some relation to humor.

RE Waterhouse: do you (or others) know if they will accept Datek wires? I'm getting conflicting info from their various departments.

TIA,

Dave
