FWIW:

The situation reminds me of early 1994. I owned Alias Research which at that time had recovered and was trading in high teens. Soft Image had just released a disappointing quarter and the stock had come down from high teens to around 13-14. I looked at the number and thought they will report atleast another bad quarter since expenses were up. So decided not to buy. A week later, MSFT announced acquisition of Softimage, the share recovered nicely and at one point was as high as 23-24 before the exchange. And ofcourse, Alias gradually tanked to $ 10 because now that MSFT owned Softimage they were going to eat Aliase's lunch. No way, I was going to dump at that price. I bought more.

By the fall of 1994, Alias had recovered and went to mid 20s, based on strong numbers before coming back to 19 or so for 3-4 months. And then ofcourse, they were bought out by Silicon Graphics. It ended being one of my best calls.

IMHO, Discreet's fate is yet to be decided. All the co. has to do is recruit a well known and credible CEO and deliver decent numbers and the stock will come back.

The difference this time for me is, I have both. This is going to be a wild ride since AVID has already said this year the acquisition will be dilutive and Discreet is still shell shocked from MGI fiasco.

The Avid/SoftImage deal actually should be pretty interesting, IMHO. Avid has had problems shipping and developing high end systems (I'm referring to toolset/capabilities). If Avid can provide seamless translation from Avid Media Composer sequences into Digital Studio, it could prove to make Digital Studio an extremely attractive product in post-production.

I actually find the Digital Studio toolset very strong, and the advancements they're making every six months is extremely impressive. The NT workstations still don't have the horsepower (I find the slow speed frustrating), IMO, but this could change as processor speeds increase.

It will be interesting to see if Avid mismanagement ends up killing SoftImage. Sumatra (their next generation 3D program) development will be interesting. I wonder how much control Avid will take over the company.

All this being said, DSLGF still makes the best high-end products, and the recent products shown at NAB are strong improvements. The company hasn't changed and they're still improving their product line. I hope they can make inroads into new markets.

Just my 2 cents.
