Advanced Fibre Communications Wins Digital Loop Carrier Bid With Venezuela's National Telephone Company, CANTV

PETALUMA, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Fibre Communications(R), Inc. (AFC) (Nasdaq: AFCI - news) announced today that it has been awarded a major supply contract for digital loop carriers by CANTV (NYSE: VNT - news), Venezuela's National Telephone Company.

The contract with CANTV calls for the addition of 40,000 POTS subscriber lines. The UMC 1000(R) platform was selected for its system scalability, making it cost-effective for CANTV to deliver both POTS and advanced services on demand to their growing customer base. CANTV currently has UMC 1000 systems deployed throughout various networks in the Tucacas region of Venezuela.

''The UMC 1000 will allow us to deploy fiber-to-the-curb and fiber-to-the-building solutions to quickly and effectively satisfy telecommunications needs throughout Venezuela,'' said Magaly Rangel de Pena, director of technology planning of CANTV. ''In the future we will be able to provide a variety of xDSL services to our customers from the same installed platform.''

CANTV will implement fiber-to-the-curb and fiber-to-the-building network topologies by deploying the UMC 1000 in AFC's Remote Subscriber Cabinets with capacities of 120, 240, 480 and 672 lines.

''The scalability of the UMC 1000 will enable CANTV to cost-effectively meet their goals in delivering timely narrowband and broadband services to their markets,'' says Gregory A. Peters, vice president of international operations at AFC. ''We look forward to expanding our relationship and playing an integral role in CANTV's evolving network expansion.''

The flexibility of the UMC 1000 platform will complement CANTV's expansion plans by offering the needed services for today with the capacity to easily handle future upgrades and further network expansion.
