Mr. Tang,

The amazing thing to me about you is this: "it is estimated that 90 percent of the genes in fruit flies have counterparts in humans". I didn't realize we had so much in common with fruit flies! But I don't doubt it for one minute. Perhaps it is a measly 10% of human genes that makes humans only slightly different from flies? And lawyers lack even that 10%? <g>

Since fruit flies are apparently so sophisticated, how about this for a similar experiment...

Spread out the IBD in a special box-like container such that all listed stocks are exposed to 500 well fed fruit flies. At some point it would seem the flies would put "little black specks", like this >>> .: : . on certain stocks. Stocks marked with such precision could then be analyzed as potential short-sell candidates since the fruit flies "dumped on" them. A "3-speck" stock would be a stronger short-sell candidate than a "1-speck, or 2-speck" stock, for example. A stock with a "5-speck" rating would be a hot short-sell candidate and a sure-fire winner!

The null hypothesis being that fruit flies do not have a stock-picking gene [not found in human beings]. The alternate hypothesis is that fruit flies do have a stock-picking gene [not found in human beings]. Wouldn't it be a lucrative hoot to discover that fruit flies have a gene for picking profitable short-sell candidates with 95+% accuracy, for example.

The market has been so bad the in the past [oil service stocks have really been dumped on, for example] that I think the fruit flies just might outperform many investors. Of course, a control group of humans would be necessary for a valid comparison - the best stock prognosticators in the world - uh, maybe Cramer and his TS.Com staff? Would Cramer be willing to risk his reputation in an experiment where he's up against 500 fruit flies? What if he lost? Bad PR! Not worth the risk, I bet. Ya he will do it. You call him at 1-800-555-1212.

As far as I know, no one has done this type of study. What do you think? It is worth doing! At least maybe a pre-test?

Great discoveries aren't made by thinking "inside the box" as they say...unless maybe it's the thinking that might go on inside a head full of fruit flies?

The above is a serious proposal that might be worthy of a major grant. Or if nothing else, at least it might provide you with a little education after a rough week in the market. [I assume you weren't short anything that a fruit fly might have picked for a "5-speck" rating.] Have a good ! ;-)
