JUN 17, 1998, M2 Communications - Xerox Corporation today moved deeper into Hewlett Packard"s core printer business with the introduction of faster and less expensive network laser printers, Xerox" first color inkjet printers for the U.S. consumer market, an expanded line of replacement cartridges for HP"s best-selling laser printers and new distribution partnerships. "These new products deepen Xerox" resolve to drive value and innovation in the printer market with network printers that are faster and less expensive than HP"s, with color inkjet printers that offer competitive alternatives to HP, and with replacement cartridges that deliver quality and greater value for HP"s existing printer customers," said Pierre Danon, president, Xerox Channels Group, the organization chartered to drive the company"s network and personal printer business. The latest Xerox incursion targets HP"s traditional strengths: black and white network laser printers for businesses, color inkjet printers for small offices and the lucrative market for supplies designed for use with HP products. Today"s announcements include: * The DocuPrint N40 Network Laser Printer: At 40 pages per minute (ppm) and an expected street price of $3,500, the DocuPrint N40 is 10 percent less expensive and 66 percent speedier than HP"sfastest office printer, similarly configured (the 24-ppm HP Mopier 240). The N40, Xerox" flagship network printer, is unmatched in its speed and price range and builds on the company"s 32-ppm N32 Printer which, according to International Data Corp., holds No. 1 marketshare over HP in the burgeoning 30-45 ppm speed class. "Xerox set the benchmark and is now raising the bar with a 40-ppm network printer that further strengthens the company"s position and changes the landscape of the network printer market," said Richard Norton of DocuTrends, a San Jose-based industry research firm. * The DocuPrint N17 Network Laser Printer: A 17-ppm printer with a base street price of $999. The DocuPrint N17 is built on the same proprietary strategic controller architecture as the N32 and N40 printers, enabling copier-like features for easier printing of multiple document sets at unprecedented network speed. The networked version is priced $175 less than comparable HP networked products. * The DocuPrint XJ6C: With a suggested retail price of $199, this color inkjet device prints up to 7 ppm in black and white and 2.5 ppm in color with a maximum 1,200 x 600 dot-per-inch resolution; the DocuPrint XJ8C, with a suggested retail price of $269, prints up to 8 ppm in black and white and 4 ppm in color at 1,200 dot-per-inch resolution. Both have a Xerox three-year warranty, unmatched by any competitive products in their class. Also included at no charge with each inkjet printer is an ArcSoft software CD that includes: PhotoStudio, PhotoPrinter, PhotoFantasy and PhotoBase, image creation and manipulation software that has a total value of over $200. * Xerox-branded toner cartridges for HP"s popular 5Si and Laser Jet 4V printers, providing current HP printer customers with high-quality guaranteed supplies retailing for 10-15 percent less than HP products. This extends the Xerox line of supplies for HP printers, introduced in September 1997 and available at growing numbers of retail office suppliers, catalog houses and computer reseller distributors nationwide. * Three significant retail partnerships that extend Xerox" distribution channels for personal printers, multifunction machines and supplies. The newest partners are Computer City, one of the largestchains of computer superstores; and Multiple Zones and CDW Computer Centers Inc., which retailthrough computer catalogs. Xerox products will now be available in sixof the top 10 computerequipment retailers and more than 3,000 storefronts in the U.S. and Canada and to millions ofcatalog shoppers.
