Unfortunately I was out of town for the weekend so I wasn't here to discuss the Germany - US match. Here are some late comments though: First half: General - US looked horrible. Nobody wanted to go to the ball. There was no movement. The US may lack in skill but there is no reason they shouldn't be the best conditioned squad in the world. There's no excuse for the complete lack of energy in the first half. Defense - I could not believe how much room they were giving the Germans. When you're playing against a team with great skill you'd better not give them 6 yards to collect the ball, turn, and observe the field before you decide to play defense. Absolutely ridiculous. I don't much care for Alexi Lalas but at least when he marks a man he's right there when the player collects the ball. If that's the way Dooley, Regis, and Pope are going to play in the back we're in a lot of trouble. One more thing: What is Mike Burns only job on that corner kick? Don't let the ball get between him and the post. Sounds easy enough, huh? Attack - Did the US attack at all? Wynalda can't play with his back to the goal and that is what is required in the 3-6-1. He should not be starting. If he's in the game play a 4-4-2 or forget scoring. Second half: General - Much better energy. The Hejduk for Burns substitution really sparked the team. Does the US team have ANYONE who can win a ball in the air? Guess not. Defense - Pope really stepped up his play in the second half. What the hell kind of pathetic play was that from Dooley on the second goal? He lunges at the ball in an all for nothing chance and he got the nothing. Klinsmann, the brilliant finisher that he is, took a gorgeous first touch with his chest that completely erased Dooley and buried the shot with his typical precision finish. You can't give Klinsmann a chance like that. Attack - Finally! The USA strung together about 15 minutes of quality world class play and looked dangerous. Hejduk really sparked them from the bench. Almost got the equalizer too if not for a spectacular save by the German keeper. I heard the announcer say Wegerle for Wynalda, but, that was the last time I heard Wegerle's name...wonder what happened to him. Once again, I'll put my vote in for Brian McBride. He might have won some balls in the air too. Where was Preki off the bench? He's much too dangerous to not get some time on the pitch. Referees: Overall a good match, but, what the heck was that off-sides call against Coby Jones? He was on-side by 5 YARDS! Unbelievable. That official won't be earning a trip to the second round I hope. Take care everyone, Gary
