PTB, here's an interesting comparison of the VIX and the S&P500:

It appears that the VIX has been on a steady climb for the last five years, except that, for the first half of this year it is running generally below the levels of second half '97. In fact, it climbed appreciably from late June to August to levels around where we are now. It did spike up after the "market event" of last October, but that was well above current levels.

I'd suggest that it is not at an extreme level that might signal a correction bottom has been seen. In other words, there is no blood in the streets. Complacency still reigns.
