software.net share price jumps 50 pct after IPO

NEW YORK, June 17 (Reuters) - Shares in online software seller software.net Corp. <SWNT.O> jumped 50 percent Wednesday to 13-1/2 after the company's initial public offering, despite growing investor fears about new issues.

software.net was the most actively traded stock on Nasdaq early today after its 5 million share IPO was priced at the top of its $7-$9 estimated pricing range.

"It doesn't hurt that they happened to go public on the day the market is roaring with this news about AT&T <T.N> and AOL <AOL.N>," said Ryan Jacob, director of research at IPO Value Monitor. "Internet stocks are doing very well."

There was frenzied trading activity in many Internet-related stocks after a published report that America Online Inc., the world's leading Internet service provider, had rebuffed merger overtures from AT&T Corp.

Analysts have compared software.net to high-flying online bookseller Amazon.com Inc. <AMZN.O> and say investors expect big things from companies that do business on the Internet.
