Jim -
There is definitely substance. I discussed this point back in February - Dell is now the only major PC vendor with no direct service and as such they will likely get a lot of benefit by playing the big consulting houses off against one another. To the EDS and Andersens of the world, CPQ, IBM and HP are very unlikely partners. But this has little to do with improved service for Dell customers.

I was actually complimenting Dell on spin control, which is not necessarily a derogatory term, at least in my book. They took a potentially negative event (the shift away from a highly successful service partner) and turned it into a positive, without any real underlying advantage. Dell just changed the focus to an area where they have a better story. They seem to do that a lot. I have the highest respect for Dell's management of their image, if CPQ was half as good I would be a much happier camper with my CPQ investment. There are strengths and weaknesses to the shift in Dell service, but you can bet that what people will remember is the strengths.
