SEC To Enforce Year 2000 Reporting

The Securities and Exchange Commission is ready to take action against public companies that don't comply with its guidelines for disclosing information on their year 2000 costs and compliance.

SEC Commissioner Laura Unger told a Senate banking subcommittee last week that while 70% of the 1,000 companies the agency reviewed disclose year 2000 project information in their annual reports, many don't follow the disclosure guidelines the SEC set in January. As a result, the commission will soon issue clarifications that may form the basis of enforcement actions against companies that don't follow the guidelines, Unger said.
