Jen: 1) You can GUESS that it is institutional buying/selling if it is coming through marketmakers/instinet. Small traders use ECN's such as ISLAND,TNTO,ATTN,etc. 2) You can GUESS the volume is real by scanning previous trades for blocks. 3) You can GUESS if market makers in control if: - it is a wide spread with low volume. - the stock is trading in a very tight range. 4) most of this info comes from experience reading Level 2 quotes.
