Microsoft Gates says lawsuit won't affect business

TOKYO, June 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT - news) chairman Bill Gates said in Tokyo on Wednesday the U.S. government's antitrust suit against the company would not affect its business.
Asked at a news conference about the possible impact of the lawsuit filed by the state and federal governments, Gates said: ''The legal issues in no way affect any of that (development plans and its business). In fact, there is no way they could.''

U.S. State and federal governments sued Microsoft last month, arguing the company had a monopoly in the operating system for personal computers and had used it to compete unfairly.

Gates is in Japan to release details of the company's latest operating software, Windows 98, ahead of its official launch in the United States on June 25 and Japan on July 25.

Gates said one of the strongest features of the new operating software is the integration of the Internet browser into the operating software. He said the same ''principles'' would apply to the evolution of the latest version of Windows NT as well, which will be released next year.

The chairman of Microsoft's Japanese unit, Toru Furukawa, told the news conference he expects shipments of Windows 98 to top 500,000 units within three months of its initial launch.
