At This Lucent Technologies Laboratory
Wireless Communication Isn't Just Plain Talk

LISLE, Ill., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Wireless communication is about to
become a lot more than talking on cellular phones. At a Lucent
Technologies wireless technology laboratory here, engineers are
beginning to see the fruits of their work with prototype services that will
have profound impact on how people use mobile phones and other
wireless devices.

Some of these services like enhanced voice mail and instant location
information services are being shown to wireless network operators who
this week are attending a symposium sponsored by Lucent, the leading
provider of wireless network technology in the U.S. The company
established its Wireless Innovation Lab here and in Toronto, staffed by
Bell Laboratories managers, as part of a program to help network
operators better compete in a crowded mobile phone market on a basis
other than voice calling plans.

Enhanced voice mail saves you the trouble of retrieving voice mail and
jotting down the caller's phone number. The feature automatically notifies
you of new messages, including display of the number of the person who
left you the message. Returning the call is as easy as pressing the ''send''
button twice.

Instant location technology, based on a government requirement to
provide emergency service personnel a quick way to find the origination
point of mobile 911 calls, enable network operators to provide custom
information services based on location. For example, if you are in the
middle of a city and you want to locate the closest movie theater and what
time each feature starts, you can access the wireless network for a display
menu of the nearest locations and start times. The menu will even provide
directions on how to get to your destination. Alternatively, if you're
feeling ill, dialing *DOC may direct you to the nearest hospital.

''Cellular companies and new personal communications services
operators are crowding the airwaves with enticing price plans,''
commented George Commons, director of the Wireless Innovation Lab.
''But network operators need to offer much more to differentiate their
service from as many as four or five competitors in a given market. Our
mission is to test these innovative service concepts and turn them into
commercial offerings.''

Under its Cooperative Innovations program, Lucent has enlisted help
from such smaller companies as Centigram Communications and
SignalSoft, which specialize in applications that give new meaning to the
buzzword ''personal communications services''. Last week Lucent
announced that Spyglass and Unwired Planet, two companies who are
leaders in technology for wireless Internet access, have also joined its
alliance program.

The solutions offered through this program complement the sophisticated
messaging and intelligent networking services which Lucent and its Octel
Messaging Division have developed, resulting in a wide array of options
available to network operators who rely on Lucent's wireless network
gear.

The Wireless Innovation Lab headed by Commons houses a full-fledged
microcosm of a telecommunications network for fine-tuning new
applications before they are deployed commercially. The wireless lab is
adjacent to a Lucent's new customer showcase that features a multimedia
conference and demonstration center where customers can see Lucent
products operate in a live networked environment. In addition to
demonstrations of existing products, the showcase allows customers to
evaluate prototypes of concept applications for use in wireless networks
as well as provide input to Lucent on market application and future
direction.
